Yi Ye Monastic School

====================================================

Yin Ye Monastic School

A Free Education Centre in Myanmar

Education is a good ground of development in every family in every society. As we know that, in 1992, we established a monastic school in our village, Yin Ye Village, Depayin Township, Sagaing Division, Myanmar and as there has not yet been any government school in the village. Our school is running in accordance with the country's current rules and regulations.

Our objectives are:

To promote the basic education of our children who are underprivileged, and

To introduce the Teachings of the Buddha to them.

We provide the students from the village and neighboring villages to learn how to read, write, and calculate exactly as taught in government primary schools; additionally we introduce the Teachings of the Buddha to the children.

The school is meant to rely on public support. Until now the only supporters of the school are the villagers. Some of them (especially parents of the students) can offer only some small amount of donations, so-called monthly fee, which is not more 500 to 1000 Myanmar Kyats (less than 1 US $), to cover teachers' salaries and school construction which is still going on. Some parents are so poor that they cannot afford the least fees for their children. As a result the poor ones, often, think of leaving the school; and we have to encourage them in ways. If we have sufficient funds, a free education will be offered to the students, as it should be "a free education center for the children", and the present capacity of the school will be expanded. But it seems that our wish cannot be accomplished unless we can collect donations from around the country and from around the world.

We believe that surplus of the rich and sufficient may be a compliment to the poor and the needy. You might have heard the following story. Once a young student removed the door curtain in his house and gave it to a poor person telling his good mother "The door does not feel the cold but the poor certainly do." Such a kind-heart is highly commendable, as you believe.

If you are willing to help the underprivileged children learning at the school, please contact our representatives in your region, or you may get in touch with the school's supporting groups. And you may come to us directly for either offering aids or ideas for the betterment of the school. Any amount of your donation and any form of your suggestion will have great impact on those children in need, and surely will change their life to be better.

Thank you.

1. A Brief History of the School

Traditionally Myanmar monks have had to participate in the country's social affairs in addition to its religious matters, especially in educational affairs particularly in rural areas.

Until 1973, before Myanmar government initiated primary schools in the region (of Yin Ye and neighboring Villages), all the people in the region were educated at their respective village monasteries providing informal education. Then, by following his late senior monks, Sayadaw U Ghosita had offered traditional monastic education to his villagers for nearly 20 years. In 1973, when the government's primary school was initiated in the Village of Tha Beik Le, a neighboring village of Yin Ye, the Sayadaw could retire from his teaching career and could focus on his religious issues as his students could go to the school to be educated. However, 8 years later, he had to resume his teaching career because the primary school could not share rooms with the students from his village due to increasing number of the students from both villages. From 1980 to 1992 he offered, again, informal education to his young villagers.

And eventually, in 1992, he and his pupil Ashin Acara jointly founded the present school offering formal education which meets the nation's educational projects. The founders are willingly struggling to modernize their school's education system.

Now, at the school, three paid volunteer teachers (from the village) and one visiting drawing instructor (from a neighboring standard village, Sai-byin-gyi) are educating 102 students (from the village and neighboring villages).

For 15 years the school has provided the villagers not only curriculum education but also strong religious foundation, social development and unity which are essential supports to the nation's progress in general.

3. Special Events for the Students

3: 1 Meditation and Education for the Students

YYMS provided its first annual event of "Meditation and Education for the Students", for its students from the 22nd to the 26th of April 2006. It was organized by the school's "Supporting Association" and "Volunteer's Committee". It was an annual event of Buddhist, educational and social. Aim of the event was to help the students enjoy a taste of Buddhist meditation, to train them to be smart public speakers, to stimulate their spirit of unity, in a word, to have fun and to learn what should be. Totally 200 students, including students from neighboring schools, participated in the event.

Ashin Acara and four native monks of the village gave meditation instructions, lessons on Buddhism and Dhamma talks to the students. U Aung Min (Head Master of the school), U Win Min Htay (assistant teacher of the school), U Zaw Myo Khaing (assistant teacher of the school), and U Thar Aung (Head master of a neighboring village) lead the other sections of the event.

The sections included in the event were as mentioned in the following time table.

Time Table for the Event

5: 00 am - Morning Chant

5: 30 am - Environmental Hygiene

6: 00 am - Breakfast

6: 30 am - Lessons on Buddhism

7: 30 am - Happy Learning: Educational Games

8: 30 am - Meditation: Breathing in and out

9: 00 am - Personal Hygiene

10: 00 am - Meditation: Breathing in and out

10: 30 am - Lunch

11: 00 am - Rest

1: 00 pm - Lesson on Buddhism

2: 00 pm - Happy Learning: Educational Games

3: 00 pm - Meditation: Breathing in and out

3: 30 pm - Creative Talk

4: 30 pm - Dinner

5: 00 pm - Happy Learning: Educational Games

6: 00 pm - Personal Hygiene

7: 00 pm - Dhamma Talk

8: 00 pm - Evening Chant

Time interval of each section is 5 to 10 minutes.

During the event three sections, "Meditation" "Educational Games" and "Creative Talk," were significant.

Meditation Section: The students vividly and incredibly revealed their acceptance, interest and respect to the subject which might generally be called "unfamiliar to them", "too sacred to them" and "extremely high for their reach."

Educational Games: Three sub-sections were included in it namely "Mentally Repetition and Verbally Recitation", "Looking and List" and "Quick Reply". The students had to listen to a teacher telling names and numbers, they had to memorize and repeat what was told; they had to look things gathered on a table and the had to make a list of what had been looked and memorized; they had to give verbal quick replies to questions set up basing on animate and inanimate things in their environment and on the subjects they had learned.

Creative Talk: It was a section of argumentative and creative talks of the students forming two groups, male and female. Two opposite groups had to argue over given topics such as "Which is better, well or lake?" They argued about each and every topic understandingly and creatively.

And in the other sections too, the students proved their united and harmonious abilities and enthusiasm.

This event was, in fact, beneficial to the students who have been willingly waiting for their chance to participate in a similar one again.

Organizers of the event are also willing to manage a similar event during coming summer holidays. The organizers hope to extend the period of the event, five-days event to seven-days event; and they hope to collect sufficient donation fund for the longer period of the event in coming years.

For the event, donations of alms food, water supply and electricity (engine) are essentially needed. Daily costs for them are as follows.

Electricity costs 10, 000 Kyats.

Water supply costs 5, 000 Kyats.

Three meals cost 200, 000 Kyats (1, 000 Kyats for each student).

3: 2 Drawing Competition

YYMS held "Myanmar Culture" drawing competition, an annual creative competition, for its students on the 7th of October 2006. Aim of the event was to stimulate the student's artistic creativity and love of their culture.

Three competition sections were provided for three groups of the students learning at Second, Third and Forth Standards. 2 students from the Second Standard, 12 students from the Third Standard and 5 students from the Forth Standard participated in the competition.

In the competition of the Forth Standard, Zaw Myo Tun won the first prize for his drawing "Water Festival", Win Moe Kyaw won the second prize for his drawing "Tha-ma-ne Festival" and Htar Htar Win won the third prize for her drawing "Water Festival."

In the competition of the Second Standard, Aung Kyi Swe and Moe Min Htet won the first and second prizes respectively for their drawings under the same title "Well."

And the rest 11 students received consoling prizes for their drawings.

Those students received exercise books, pens, pencils and drawing materials as prizes for their effort on the creative and attractive drawings representing Myanmar Culture. Any form of prizes from well-wishers will admiringly be presented to the students.

5. Future Plan of the School

The founders are willing to expand the present capacity of the school providing education just for the villagers. When conditions are favoured, the school will be developed into a Middle School, and moreover a High School which will offer free-education to students from neighboring 13 villages; and eventually, using precious space of the rural land, a Monastic Institution is to be established, providing Buddhist Abhidhamma and Pali Language to the nation's novices aged 11 to 15 and also to the world's students interesting in the subjects. But this plan still remains as a common dream of the founders and members of the supporting groups due to un-ripen conditions, especially due to insufficient fund.
